Maavee MyLife: The June Cocktail šŸ¹

LGBTQ+ Pride, Dude Health, AI Anxiety, and The Great Outdoors

In partnership with

Hello Maavee Community!

What do LGBTQ+ Pride, Men's Health, and The Great Outdoors have in common? Well, they prove that wellness isn’t just about eating kale and doing yoga. This month, we encourage you to get your wellness on by rocking rainbow socks, hitting up the doc for a check-up, and getting lost in the woods (hopefully not literally)! Read on to catch some tips and lessons in leadership from icons like David Chokachi and Ted Lasso. And as always, there is no shortage of curiosity to be sparked in this edition of MyLife — think: AI anxiety, and hoodies made from coffee!

Enjoy and be well,
Frank, Founder & Chief Wellness Junkie

šŸœ Noodle on this…

ā

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

John Muir

John Muir (April 21, 1838 – December 24, 1914) also known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks" was a Scottish-born American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, botanist, zoologist, glaciologist, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States.

😲 On the lighter side

Does anyone out there have AI anxiety? We posed this question to ChatGPT and voila…a very quick answer. After listing seven groups of people particularly susceptible, it then listed an eighth: ā€œthe general public.ā€ So essentially, the answer is ā€œeveryone.ā€

Never before in human history has technology advanced so quickly and with such far-reaching impacts. By 2030, the world will be unrecognizable — blockchain technology (and cryptocurrency, a blockchain use case) will change our financial system, biotechnology will change the length of our lives, robotics will change the need for manual labor (bye-bye taxis), and AI will change everything. I will not even mention quantum computing. 🤯

We cannot underestimate its impact on ourselves and society-at-large. But, we are all used to change, right? Well, it’s the one thing that you can truly count on in life — that it changes. But at this breakneck pace, we are dealing with something new to humankind. Not too long ago, the ā€œnew normalā€ meant life after COVID (oh yeah, there’s that), but now it means that we need to get used to accelerated change from technology. This is, in fact, the new normal, that will impact every living and future generation, every vocation, every country, every religion, everyTHING.

So, what do we do? How do we find ease as the world speeds up? Well, there are lots of things that you can do, but at the top of the list is to educate yourself. Dip your toe in the water (learn)…then your foot (try it out)…then jump when you feel safe (sky’s the limit). Maavee is here to help you discover ways to be well. One way to educate yourself is to read, so we’ve partnered with The Rundown AI, a newsletter about all things AI — an easy way to dip your toe in the water! 🦶

Learn how to make AI work for you.

AI breakthroughs happen every day. But where do you learn to actually apply the tech to your work? Join The Rundown — the world’s largest AI newsletter read by over 600,000 early adopters staying ahead of the curve.

šŸ’¬ Ask Viti

Maavee is gradually introducing AI into your wellness experience. Another toe-dipping exercise is to open the Maavee app and ask Viti things like: ā€œHow can I help reduce plastic in the world?ā€ or ā€œHow can I reduce AI anxiety?ā€ Let them tell you a bit more and help you discover solutions that might help.

⚽ Ted talks (not TED Talks)

Last month we made great strides to advance the mental health movement. If you did not catch the 2024 Mental Health & Well-being Global Summit, do not fret. While it’s no longer free, you can still access more than 50 sessions here.

That said, June is Pride Month, and Maavee celebrates all those who have and will come out to their friends and family. There is no mental health and well-being for any of us if we aren’t living an authentic life. We invite you to jump into the Maavee app to watch Ted Lasso and his brilliant leadership as Colin comes out to his teammates at AFC Richmond. Proud moment!

šŸ™Œ It’s on!

You’re probably thinking, wow, men just don’t get celebrated enough in this culture, amirite? Indeed, while the patriarchy is nauseating, it is quite important to acknowledge June as Men’s Health Month, because men are notoriously terrible about going to the doctor and admitting health concerns. Women start at a very early age learning the importance of a physician visit, while many men go the first half of their lifetime without so much as a basic physical! Men, make this the year you commit to self-advocacy. Find relief from peeing into a lab cup! The one hour you spend at the doc may save your life…and you won’t have to think about anything for another 364 days. Seems like a good ratio. Hop to it, men!

Summer is upon us, with free vitamin D at our doorsteps! June is Great Outdoors Month, and there is no underestimating the value of getting out of the house or office. (And walking from those places to your car doesn’t count.) Get OUT! Committing to fifteen minutes a day for a quick walk or just quiet time outdoors in a chair, thinking about how sexy those nature poets were, will add immeasurably to your wellness journey. As Henry David Thoreux famously said, ā€œthis fresh air is bitchin!ā€ Okay he didn’t, but that’s the ultimate subtext.  Get in touch with your inner outer this June!

And if we are going to reconnect with nature and hit the great outdoors, we need to take care of what mother nature so graciously provides. In April, we celebrated Earth Day and on June 8th, we encourage you to support World Oceans Day. Here’s a little inspiration for the Maavee community from our good friend David Chokachi, iconic star of TV’s Baywatch, who is also a real-life activist for our oceans and beaches. Plus, jump into the Maavee app to register for the free, virtual World Oceans Day event hosted by the United Nations. This is water you want to dip your toe into! 🌊

Our very own Eric Blume sat down with ā€œChokesā€ to get his thoughts on well-being, the environment, and our oceans.

Maavee:  In real life, you’ve long been associated with the Surfrider Foundation, right?  Their whole goal is dedication to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans.

David:  The coolest thing that happened with my involvement with Surfrider is they give an award every five years, and it was a really cool thing to be honored with, because it’s for people or groups who, without asking, go out of their way to help further the cause about appreciating and caring for our oceans.  They’re a really special organization.

Maavee:  Did shooting Baywatch, where you were actually shooting every day on a beach and in an ocean, spark your love for that environment?

David:  Oh for sure, but I grew up sailing, and I spent a lot of my youth in the ocean. When I got to Baywatch, they did an episode about cutting water quality testing from one of the beaches with bad results (shocker!). Surfrider was actively involved in that episode, and I’ve been an ambassador for them ever since. I think being on the show back then, I’ve seen over the years, drastically, a horrible increase in the amount of trash in the ocean. When you’re swimming, you don’t always see it, but when you’re surfing, it’s everywhere. The more time I spend in the water, the more I see how bad it is. The only people who can change that is us.

Maavee:  You’re identified by the public as a ā€œbeach and oceans guyā€ because of so many projects in your career, and in your life. Do you enjoy that perception?

David:  Oh my god, a thousand percent! I don’t care if casting agents see me as a ā€œsurfer dudeā€ and that limits me. But for me, there’s literally a calling…I really need to go into the ocean because I know the waves will be good, and I’ll feel alive. A lot of surfers have that weird connection to the ocean where they feel the same way…it’s calling them to come in. The ocean does something to my DNA, to my chemistry. If I’m feeling depressed or down, I surf, or I do really long swims. Sometimes knowing there are sharks out there, it just makes you feel alive. It's like bungie-jumping, this cool feeling where I’m not scared.

Maavee:  You’re a fit and healthy guy. Any secrets for our community?

David:  At the age where I am, you need to work twice as hard just to keep a basic foundation for physical health. Yoga is huge part of it for me. I do a combination of yoga, trail running, lifting weights, and surfing. I’ve also gotten into cold plunging in combination with saunas. It’s all very resetting. Cold plunging is an amazing tool for changing how you feel internally, mentally, and physically.

Maavee:  Well, the Maavee community is wishing you a happy World Oceans Day this June 8th!

David: Anything for the ocean, it’s game on for me!

In which of these June "wellness days" are you most likely to engage?

We encourage you to engage in at least one. Jump into the Maavee app for some tips to get involved!
